Construction Update – August 2015

Karen Averby - @ArchAHeritage

The Visitor Centre timber structure was successfully erected in just under four weeks, which was quicker than planned.

280 separate panels  were bolted or screwed together to form the 40 metre long building.

Waterproofing and insulating of the outside of the building are now taking place, before fixing the final cladding layer. The finish of the building has been changed from the original mirrored glass to  recycled deck boards with stainless steel features, to harmonise with the Old Pavilion building.

Along with cladding of the outside of the building, the inside will be fitted out to create the various spaces for the education, digital archive function room, the shop and kitchen.

On the West side of the Old Pavilion, the cast iron balustrading is being reinstated.  It is exactly 100 years since this was originally installed. It has been completely refurbished and missing sections replaced.  It is being protected with six coats of marine grade paint to last another 100 years.

At the Pier Head  the replacement of the trusses, deck beams and bracing  progress towards the end of the Pier.
