Construction update:

The construction of the Visitor Centre is progressing well.

The operation to cast the concrete slab went exactly to plan. The promenade was closed, and 165 tonnes of ready mixed concrete was pumped from the lay-by 200 metres out to the Visitor Centre.

After seven days the concrete was tested to check that it had reached strength so that it could take the weight of the crane. The timber panels for the new building have been delivered and are now being erected. Because of the size of the panels, we are very dependent on the weather as we can’t erect when it is too windy.

The Bandstand Pavilion shell is now complete ready for fitting out as the restaurant. The cast iron balustrade has been repaired and will now be re-instated. At the Pier Head we are continuing with the replacement of the trusses, deck beams and bracing as we progress towards the end of the Pier.

"Under the Pier" by David Armer
Hands on Heritage
Photographing Hastings Pier

On Friday 24th July 14 adults and 6 young people joined Hastings Pier Charity’s Learning and Education team for a special day of photography.
We started at the Jerwood with talks by photographers Simon Roberts and John Cole.
From 2010 to 2013 Simon documented every surviving pier around the British coast to produce a book and body of work called Pierdom. His photo of Hastings Pier is currently on display at the Jerwood.
John Cole has been capturing the workers re constructing Hastings Pier, ‘Unsung Heroes’. We are working towards an exhibition of John’s work.

Photographer Grace Lau led a debate around what makes an interesting photograph and then after a health and safety talk from our Construction Project Manager, David Spooner, the group took their own photographs of the pier. We will present a digital exhibition of their photos later in the year.

“Exceptionally good and enjoyable day - very well organised - thank you!”
“It made me think about what I was looking at, and evaluate before taking photos”
“The staff and volunteers were all so friendly and informative”

8 Beautiful Piers to Promenade

http://heritagecalling.com/2015/07/22/8-piers-to-promenade/

The seaside pier is perhaps the most iconic symbol of the British holiday resort and for many of us it is the epitome of excursions to the seaside. Despite the massive losses in the 20th century – through fire, the power of the sea and neglect – we still have more seaside piers around our coast than any other country in the world.

And, amazingly under the circumstances, we made No. 6

“There is only limited access [?] to Hastings Pier but you can watch the builders busily restoring it after the disastrous fire of October 2010. It was the first true pleasure pier, sporting a 2,000 seat oriental style pavilion when it opened in August 1872.”

"Octopus's Garden" at the Pier Hub

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus's garden in the shade
I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus's garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

Hastings and St Leonards Observer - Saturday 15 January 1870
The Pier -  People are wondering and rumour has been busy at work as to the cause of the cessation of labour at the pier.  The reason is very simple and satisfactory.  The contractors, Messrs. Laidlaw, are awaiting the manufacture of some iron work which is being proceeded with at Glasgow.

A thing of beauty…..
