Breaking News! Crowdfunding extended for one month!

Not quite the last chance saloon though feeling a bit like

From the Journal of a Disappointed Man - Andrew Motion

Right now we are really close to our target of £500,000 and we have an extension on our crowdfunder of one month, to help us reach our target. This is great news!

No announcement has been made on the fate of the Pier, and we hope that the extra money we can raise in that month will swing a decision in our favour.

If we don’t reach our target or are not successful in our bid, your money will be returned to you.

Last Chance Saloon*

"The loss of Hastings Pier as a community business would be a tragedy and would have repercussions throughout the country.

What community is going to make the effort required if they think it could all be taken away from them like this?

"If you care about community ownership… please show your solidarity and donate right now as much as you can afford so we can get to £500,000 and have the chance to prove that the pier can be both community and commercial."
*Saloon reference:

From the Hastings News of 21/07/1871 ” The new saloon is almost completed and will be the biggest room in the borough.

Friends of Hastings Pier have only 3 days left to raise £100,000 through crowdfunding to keep Hastings Pier in community ownership.

The Friends of Hastings Pier Crowdfunder

This also outlines who they are, their principles, and has some very powerful messages explaining why people care so much.   It has been heartwarming to hear directly from people how much the Pier means to them.

In parallel, FoHP are working with larger contributors, donors and a commercial operator to secure the future of the Pier.

Great minds think alike!

Mum writes to Sir Paul McCartney to ‘save Hastings Pier’ in son’s memory.

Brad – who was a drummer in a number of bands in Hastings moved to Hastings in 2008.  He spent many years mentoring young musicians, helping to build up their confidence to perform on Hastings Pier – something he had done many times during his drumming days.

End of an era - L & E says goodbye

17th May 2018 marked the end of a special chapter on the Pier (and in the Pier Hub before that.  see

An Important Part of Pier History–The Hub )

Since 2013 they have worked with the local community, including schools , families , young people and adults from diverse backgrounds in all sorts of different ways, helping them learn about Hastings Pier’s past through interpretation and activities, write poetry, attend Science sessions, learn engineering basics (with chocolate, sugar, toothpicks and wine gums) and so much, much more.

They have established Hastings Pier as a national heritage icon, established an archive of photographs and worked with over 250,000 local people on a huge range of community projects.

They founded Zooquarium, which saw 60 local young people run a music festival attended by 2,000 people; co-curated the world famous Cabaret Mechanical Theatre's exhibition 'Automata on the Pier', and have set up 100 work placements, 140 volunteers and 6 apprenticeships, not to mention the fabulous yarn bombing.

Thank you to Beatrice Rapley (and Melanie Parker during Bea's maternity leave) Jo McLaughlan, Susan Kent, Yaz Norris and Francesca Piacentini.

And while we're on the subject....

........ what about Simon Fuller?

"From Hastings pier to Pop Idol: Fuller named Britain's most successful music manager"

He may have started out in the time-honoured fashion of promoting gigs on the pier in his hometown, Hastings. Yet yesterday, Simon Fuller, the man who quit East Sussex to bring the world the commercial glories of the Spice Girls, S Club 7 and Pop Idol – revolutionising the global music industry – was named the most successful British pop music manager of all time.

Amber Rudd ‘pleased to see’ community bid for Hastings Pier

In discussions with the pier’s administrators, Ms Rudd said she learned a number of offers for the pier had been received and were currently all under consideration. The administrators said they had also received a number of revisions to these offers and they hoped to make a decision shortly so the new owner may make full use of the boost in tourism over summer.

Everybody but the Beatles! Now there's a thought.

It's reported that Sir Paul McCartney is worth £850,000,000.

Maybe he would like to donate a modicum of that sum to help atone for the solecism committed (allegedly) in 1964.

More names from the 'pop' world are due at Hastings Pier in the coming months..... and the Beatles in September.
