Roll Up! Roll Up! Volunteers Wanted

Hastings Pier is looking for volunteers to support planned visitor attractions, events, schools activities and retail outlets.

“Volunteers will play a huge role and will be an integral part of the pier’s success,” said operations manager Karen Trimmings.

“There will be opportunities in events, retail, visitor services, and education and heritage interpretation, giving all volunteers the chance to build on their current skillset and gain valuable experience in the tourism and entertainment sector.”

Hastings Pier Charity will be hosting a volunteer recruitment day at the White Rock Hotel on Tuesday, March 8.

From midday to 3pm, attendees will have the chance to meet the team, register their interest and find out more about the roles on offer.

There will be talks at midday, 1pm and 2pm.

Hastings Pier: A Unique Event Space on the South Coast

Aah, love Hastings - its a town full of characters, history, and potential !
........... feel a personal connection and have followed the progression of the Victorian pier rebuild with interest. So it was a real pleasure to be asked to help produce a B2B marketing strategy for the new event spaces that will be available on the structure when it opens later this year.  The pier has a long history of hosting music events, including famous artists such Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix and so it was clear that targeting national live music promoters with a strong proposition should be a natural focus for the strategy.  Also advising the construction team to ensure that sufficient infrastructure and facilities were available to support a variety of outdoor events and keep the spaces versatile.

........ In fact it is looking increasingly likely that Hastings will be getting some major artists performing this summer. Watch this space !

Hastings Writers Group

At their first meeting of the year there was a wide variety of genres, styles and voices, all on the loose theme of Hastings, as all proceeds will be donated to the Hastings Pier Charity.

"We had Grey Owl, magical mermaids, stories set on the sea shore, a library and an art gallery, two tales of thwarted love and one about a man whose main love was drinking. We had poems celebrating, the pier, rain, beach and everything we have on offer in our quirky town. We finished off with a light-hearted writing “splurge”, extrapolating paragraphs from prompts inspired by words connected to our town. Watch this space for the further adventures of Arthur, the East End seagull, who could well turn out to be our most celebrated ‘Down from London’-er ever."

Construction Update February 2016

The construction works are nearing completion; the cranes are out whenever the wind ceases to blow!

The Visitor Centres fitting out is being finalised and the external cladding finished. The glass balustrade and steps will be fitted by the end of the month. The installation of the equipment exhibits will then be done, ready for the opening in a couple of months.

The furniture for the roof terrace has been made by Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling and some of this has now been delivered.

The final trusses and beams are being installed at the far end of the Pier, to be quickly followed by the timber joists and decking and balustrade. Fitting out of the Pavilion restaurant is well under way.

Soon the huts remaining along the front will be removed,  the wave breaks installed, and the repairing and painting of the railings take place..

The end (or the beginning) is in sight.

'My Pier' Celebration Bunting

There was a great start to our ‘My Pier’ Celebration Bunting project with a day at Sussex Coast College on 28th January. Around 80 students joined in on the day, while other art and illustration students will be taking part in their departments.

The students used images from the HPC digital collection to find out about the heritage of the Pier and inspire their bunting designs.

As well as schools and playgroups, youth groups such as the Guiding and Scouting organisations and the Woodcraft folk are also taking part.

If you run a group for young people and would like to join in please email  learning@hpcharity.co.uk for information and to receive a resource pack.

"Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose"

In his after-dinner speech the Earl told the imbibing audience "This pier, if I may so use the phrase, appears to me to be a peerless pier - a pier without a peer - except, perhaps, the unfortunate peer who is now addressing you.".

Granville was followed by engineer Eugenius Birch, who tried to explain the long delay by Laidlaw, the contractors, in building the pier. He said that construction had been delayed for over a year because of "the extraordinary nature of the foundation, and the state of the elements". Their work had been "fraught with difficulties - in the highest terms. ... As the piles were inserted, almost every column was met by the trunk of some huge oak.  To such an extent and so great were the difficulties that it had almost baffled the contractors to complete the structure. ... During the 30 years in which he had been engaged in the profession, and during his experience in the erection of 14 piers, he had not had one in which greater difficulties had to be overcome."  He thought that if the contract were taken out at the time he was speaking, it would cost £50-60,000 rather £23,000.

Under the Pier you can....

....catch Velvet Swimming Crabs, Shore crabs, hairy crabs and maybe a Spiney spider crab.  Masked Crabs can be seen at very low water and they walk backwards into their burrows.  Mussels, limpets, barnacles, oysters and sea anemones cling to the structure and you can see them at low water.

Jetsam discarded from fishing boats and passing ships adorn the structure.  Turnstones live on the Pier except when breeding and pick crustaceans and seaweed off the bracing and columns and all along on the beach.

In the evening Starlings used gather to Murmurate at the end of the Pier.
