Archie's Pier Film

http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/re-a-pier-2015

Documentary about Hastings Pier charting the 9-year, people-led battle to revive the most loved icon of the most famous town in the world.

Project aim
Re: A Pier is a feature-length documentary about Hastings Pier. I've been filming it for 9 years (!) and it's now in the final straight towards completion.

What's the money for?
The entire project has been self-funded, to keep it 100% independent, so Archie has paid for everything so far (with the help of a previous successful Crowdfunder callout in 2011). He's now at the edit stage, having arranged 18 months of unpaid leave from his day job; and surprisingly, this 6-month post-production period is going to cost nearly as much as the entire 9-year shoot.

That's partly because he's now established a little production collective with four other practitioners. They're absolutely crucial to the project, they're all Hastings people, and they definitely need paying. The £3500 will go entirely to them.

Looking Good!

image

The Pavilion refurbishment progresses with the structure of the new walls in preparation for the glazing to be installed shortly. This will then allow the finishes inside to be carried out.

The roof works are all complete and the scaffold is being dismantled.

The main structural restoration through the central section of the Pier is continuing. This is the area that has deteriorated the most and virtually all of the trusses and beams have to be replaced..

Also in this section are the columns that were installed in 1946 when the quality of steel available was very poor.  Consequently these columns have not lasted particularly well so they are now being reinforced with a steel casing which will make them as strong as the other columns.

March will see the start of the final phase of the steelwork replacement, with work on the Pier Head getting under way.  Whilst the process of replacing trusses and beams will be the same as elsewhere, the intention is to use two small cranes to assist which will speed up the process.

So far this winter, the weather has not been too bad although about five days of production was lost when work stopped because of the wind.  The further out the site of work, the worse the conditions are.

Fingers crossed for no more wind!
