The Helical Screw

The original screw pile mechanism was invented and patented by Irish engineer Alexander Mitchell in the 1830's.  His original design was a simple but effective means of construction for lighthouses, ship moorings, beacons and other structures on mud banks and shifting sands.

Eugenius Birch, another British engineer,  adopted the screw piling technique in his construction of many of our seaside piers. He built at least 14 piers.  Piles were set down using dozens of cast iron threaded columns which were screwed into the seabed.  A lattice of ties and girders  provided the support the the promenade deck.

Ballroom skeletons–1917 & 2010

After the fire in 1917, the new ballroom opened five years later, after the wholesale destruction of 2010, the pier will, hopefully, open five years later.

For the record……

The Observer, in an article on 18th May 2014, says “Due to be completed in Spring 2015, work on the pier started in January this year.”.
What they probably meant was visible work on the pier started in January this year.  Unless of course, you happened to be out at low tide at 4 (or earlier) in the morning on many occasions last year, when you would have seen the dedicated Project Engineer and others at work.
Or later in the day seen the drone fly overhead, or even lent a hand with the barnacle scraping!
Check out some of the items below:

Life-saving defibrillator is placed by Hastings Pier funded by………

……two locally-based companies, Timbercraft UK and FPE Steelworks.

Both firms are also heavily involved with the current £14 million renovation work on the 140-year-old structure.

“Time and tide wait for no man!”

…..so many thanks to Woollycrete from Hailsham, who came to Hastings Pier's aid at very short notice, stepping in to deliver concrete after 7pm because a local supplier was unable to turn up.

Concrete is used for column repairs and abrasion guards and has to be in place before the tide flows back in. The Spring Tides give South Coast Structures maximum beach time to complete the work.

Whoever gets shot deserves it….

For an incredible list of groups appearing on the Pier 1962 onwards http://dizzytigerstu.proboards.com/thread/883
I think the most comprehensive list I’ve seen to date - a lot of work to catalogue them… well done to the author.
And while you are perusing the list, why not partake of some  Sex On the Pier, Beverage created by Back Beard the pirate in 1532.  The recipe was locked away with the rest of Black Beard's treasure. When the treasure was rediscovered the recipe was disregarded as worthless by hapless losers.  The recipe was then rediscover by Julian Nagy in early 2011 in his historic New Paltz, NY home.  It was then renamed Sex on the pier by his close friend Eric Vaughn because of its similarity to sex on the beach.
Recipe consists of 1 part orange juice, one part cranberry juice, and one part Gin and tonic

Construction Update

When we last left you Timbercraft UK were starting to lay the first planks of the deck on the pier. You will be glad to know that we have pushed ahead with this and are also moving forward with the substructure.  During the past month FPE have been replacing the steel trusses and have now completed two thirds of the work of the parade extension section.  New hardwood joists and decking follow on behind the repair work.

During the storm at the beginning of February some damage was suffered at the Pier Head.  We have been investigating this and assessing the extent of the damage and formulating our plans for the repairs.  We expect to start theses repairs in advance of the demolition and so reduce the effect on the projects timetable.

We have taken down the cast iron balustrade from one side of the Pier, this has been taken away to be shot blasted and repaired by Mather & Smith.  This will then be coated with the highest quality marine paint treatment which will protect it for the next fifteen years.  The rebuilding and refurbishment of the remaining building on the pier (currently the site office) is next on the agenda.  The building will be converted into what will be a restaurant where chefs will train young people for a career in the catering industry.  Work on  this will begin in June.
For more information on the pier and its reconstruction please visit our
website or come along to a teatime update.

The Hub

We've been very busy at The Hub over the past month. With Chocolate Engineering being such a resounding success we then had our second family workshop, Cake Construction, on the 19th April.  Families learnt about the original construction of the pier and then had a go at building one themselves.  As well as Cake Construction over the Easter holidays The Hub played host to a series of photographs taken by photographer Peter Cresswell.  These were stereoscopic photographs, taken in a style popularised during the Victorian era, which makes them appear 3D when viewed in their specially built viewers.

Another great event to go to is our under fives explorer sessions held every first Thursday of the month from 10:30 to 11:15.  Come to The Hub and have fun exploring Hastings Pier using stories songs and games.

If you're a music enthusiast then come along on the 22nd May.  Andre Palfrey-Martin, a local archivist and in the past a DJ on, the pier, will be giving a talk on the pier's musical history, looking at various bands who played on the pier from the 50;s till modern day.  To finish on a musical theme on the 25th of May our next family event will be taking place at The Hub where you can learn how to play traditional African percussion.
For more information on what's on please
visit out website or drop us an email.

Under the Pier

One of the best singles to come out of the mod-revival
Huggy Leaver (Vocals), Ken Copsey (lead guitar), Paul Thomas (rhythm guitar), Eddie Mays (bass) and Dave Blackman (drums) take on the Troggs and come out on top
I also like the fact that they are under Brighton Pier - very mod!

Much more mod than that! - Thanks for posting, an' all, but that's Hastings' finest under Hastings pier...
