People's pier stories

PEOPLE OF HASTINGS, WE NEED YOUR HELP!  Our archiving team are busy gathering stories, pictures and mementos to be added to our digital archive, but we need more!  Come along to The Hub on Sunday 11th May, 11am - 4pm and meet our archive team.  They will photograph and scan your pictures, tickets and postcards to be put into the digital archive for all to see once the pier has been built.  Come along for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a dance display and a mini scooter rally whilst you're at it!  For more information visit our website.

Construction Update

When we last left you Timbercraft UK were starting to lay the first planks of the deck on the pier. You will be glad to know that we have pushed ahead with this and are also moving forward with the substructure.  During the past month FPE have been replacing the steel trusses and have now completed two thirds of the work of the parade extension section.  New hardwood joists and decking follow on behind the repair work.

During the storm at the beginning of February some damage was suffered at the Pier Head.  We have been investigating this and assessing the extent of the damage and formulating our plans for the repairs.  We expect to start theses repairs in advance of the demolition and so reduce the effect on the projects timetable.

We have taken down the cast iron balustrade from one side of the Pier, this has been taken away to be shot blasted and repaired by Mather & Smith.  This will then be coated with the highest quality marine paint treatment which will protect it for the next fifteen years.  The rebuilding and refurbishment of the remaining building on the pier (currently the site office) is next on the agenda.  The building will be converted into what will be a restaurant where chefs will train young people for a career in the catering industry.  Work on  this will begin in June.
For more information on the pier and its reconstruction please visit our
website or come along to a teatime update.

The Hub

We've been very busy at The Hub over the past month. With Chocolate Engineering being such a resounding success we then had our second family workshop, Cake Construction, on the 19th April.  Families learnt about the original construction of the pier and then had a go at building one themselves.  As well as Cake Construction over the Easter holidays The Hub played host to a series of photographs taken by photographer Peter Cresswell.  These were stereoscopic photographs, taken in a style popularised during the Victorian era, which makes them appear 3D when viewed in their specially built viewers.

Another great event to go to is our under fives explorer sessions held every first Thursday of the month from 10:30 to 11:15.  Come to The Hub and have fun exploring Hastings Pier using stories songs and games.

If you're a music enthusiast then come along on the 22nd May.  Andre Palfrey-Martin, a local archivist and in the past a DJ on, the pier, will be giving a talk on the pier's musical history, looking at various bands who played on the pier from the 50;s till modern day.  To finish on a musical theme on the 25th of May our next family event will be taking place at The Hub where you can learn how to play traditional African percussion.
