Hastings Pier Competition 1990




A national design competition organised by the Hastings Urban Conservation Project and sponsored by Hastings Borough Council, Building Design magazine and SENews. 114 entries received, mostly from professional architects.

  1. Fascinating to see this again. Makes you think about the different kinds of community action. Organising this back in 1990 was obviously hard work and dedicated. But ultimately it didn't work. I'm one of those people who believes that failures are at least as important lessons as successes. What was it that we did differently 2006-13 that resulted in £14m, the pier in community ownership, and the works underway to make it a 21st century pleasure pier, the People's Pier? The most obvious thing is that we focused on actually *doing* rather than pressuring/enabling. I think communities have to do that now - focus on taking over. It feels a bit more like the 1970s when 'ordinary' people built all those amazing adventure playgrounds. It's so hard, such a battle, but JFDI.
