The Opening of the Pier
The Southeastern Advertiser, Saturday August 10, 1872
By this time the fact that Hastings has a Pier, and that the magnificent structure was formally opened by Lord Granville on Monday last, has been read by hundreds of thousand of people throughout the United Kingdom. The daily press has been good enough to proclacim the important fact for us from one end of the kingdomt to the other, and by and bye [sic] the mails will carry to all parts - even to the bright and sunny land from which came the copper-coloured princes who graced the proceedings on Monday - the news, to make the pun which seems to be running riot from the mouths of us all, Lord Granville to the smallest urchin in our streets, that Hastings is no longer a pierless watering place. This is not the place in which to attempt to cast the horoscope of the new Pier, and indeed, if it were, one would scarcely be disposed to take the position of the stars, or, in other words, the unfavourable character of the elements, at the time of what we may call its birth on Monday last, as an omen of the future…………If we had been but fortunate in getting a fine day, Monday would stand out as the brightest red-letter day in our annal - a day which could fairly rank in importance with that on which the fact that we were one of the best drained towns in the kingdom trumpeted forth to the world. ………………………….The weather-wise proved, unfortunately, to be anything but false prophets. …….. We could scarcely credit that all those elaborate preparations for rejoicing would be lost, that the bunting which floated so gaily from windows and from line across th thoroughfares, that the two hundred flagts which were so tasetefully arranged around the structure which was to be the great scene of action to-dfay, that the decorations which met one's eye here, there and everywhere, that all would positively only add to the general depression instead of lending an inspiring air to the scene………. But at about ten o'clock the threatening rain came at last. The sullen, wretched clouds, that had been lowering gloomily over us all the morning opened upon us, and down came the rain like a miniature deluge.
At ten o’clock we had lovely weather, but in the afternooon……..

dRMM–The Architects –
Our approach was simple: to develop the project with the people of Hastings through a series of participation events and workshops.
We discovered a community that was individualistic and eclectic but with a proud shared identity embodied in the pier.
Following the consultation period, we created a stable platform structure which is sustainable and flexible and serves to accommodate a broad range of future uses.
In all our cultural projects we look to involve the public as much as possible, and from its inception we have tried to give the people of Hastings the lead in the redevelopment of their much-loved Pier.
The new structure is one that we trust the Victorian forefathers would embrace: Pier as engineering spectacle in close connection with the sea, but also as an on-going project, reinventing itself for each successive generation.

St Lubbock’s Day, Monday 5 August 1872
The brand new Hastings Pier was formally opened by the Earl of Granville, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, on a very wet and windy Monday 5 August 1872.
There was heavy rain and strong winds for much of the day. Gun salutes were fired from the pier-head and by Thomas Brassey MP’s yacht Eothen, lying close by.
The company and supporters then sat down to a celebration déjeuner in the pier’s pavilion. The 630 partakers were all that was wealthy, elegant and important in the town, paying four shillings for a splendid feast that included such delights as quarters of lamb, roast fowl, lobster, Leeds Pudding and blancmange.
LEED'S PUDDING.
Beat 9 eggs, adding 1 pt cream and a pinch of salt;
steam in a prepared mould for about 20 minutes; serve
with a cherry sauce, round the base, and hot sherry in a
boat.
RED CHERRY ARROWROOT SAUCE.
Stone and pass 1 lb red cherries through a sieve; boil
a little syrup down strong; add the cherries, a few drops
of cochineal and some lemon juice: thicken slightly with
arrowroot, and serve.
RED CHERRY SAUCE (1).
Use a compote of red cherries with sufficient arrow-
root.
RED CHERRY SAUCE (2).
Stew 1lb stoned red cherries in a little syrup; pass
them through a sieve, and add one glass of port wine,
and some royal white sweet garnish pudding; cut into
rather small dice and throw in at the last.

Construction update – April 2016
Construction is preparing to hand over to Operations and Maintenance.
The Pier Head balustrade and front lighting are still to be finished as well the fitting out of the displays inside The Pavilion restaurant and The Deck.
The electrics, water, heating and ventilation systems and lift have been tested as the retail kiosks are being fitted out.
Maintenance of the structure starts now, so the older trusses and bracings go into an inspection process with planned replacement into the future. It is this work which has to be funded by successful Operations and activities on the Pier to prevent the Pier falling into decline and is key to preserving its heritage.
Hastings Pier has entered the next stage in its evolution and this is an exciting prospect for the all piers in general and for this town in particular.

Adopt a Plank update
There have been a lot of enquiries about the Adopt a Plank scheme which closed in 2013. In response all the information which was received from HPWRT (who originally ran the scheme) has been put together and a register of adopters compiled. These have now been send to the engraver and it is hoped to have the plaques installed on the Pier before opening.
The White Rock Trust recently also sent a list of additional names of people who adopted planks. We have contacted everyone whose email address we already had but do not have contact details for the names in the list below. If your name is below we would like to hear from you, so that we can organise a message to put on your plaque.
