So what will be on the Pier?
The money raised through community shares is being used to complete the rebuild funds and building of attractions on the landmark building.
Among those being discussed are:
- a restaurant under the guidance of Jamie Grainger-Smith who opened Jamie Oliver’s ‘15’ restaurant in Shoreditch. Mr Grainger-Smith will work as general manager .
- creation of a micro-brewery on the pier - which could be the first of its kind in the country
- an urban park for:
- funfairs
- a circus
- open-air cinema and theatre
- farmers’ markets
- deck-chair hire
A Heritage Centre, mirrored on the outside to reflect the seaside views, will house a memory bank for the pier’s history. The work of collating those memories, from residents old and young, will begin over the Summer with the aim of creating a living history of the pier from recorded recollections and photographs.
And the good thing is the pier will always be run by its shareholders. It’s about community shareholding.

Costings – for all those that keep asking!
Contracts for the FSC-certified azobé deck boards and joists are worth a total of about £600,000.
Illingworth Ingham is supplying 200m3 of azobé deck joists to contractor FPE Global Holdings, which is completing the structural steelwork to form the main structure up to the pier head. Dutch hardwood supplier Wijma imported the timber from Africa and supplied Illingworth Ingham
Pier construction site manager David Spooner told TTJ that Ecochoice Ltd is supplying 75,000 linear metres of 145x35mm azobé deck boards direct to the Hastings Pier Charity in a contract valued at about £350,000.
The deck installation work, being undertaken by Hastings-based TimberCraftUK, will take about 12 months to complete.
Mr Spooner said the deck structure was being built gradually from the pier entrance out to the damaged pier head to give demolition contractors access to the old ballroom, gutted in a fire in 2010.
"We've been taking up the old deck, which is about 50-100 years old and some of it is in excellent condition," said Mr Spooner.
"It's a great advert for marine hardwood. We will use as much of it as we can to make furniture for the pier."
Jarrah, purpleheart, greenheart and balau are species identified among the old timbers.
A cross-laminated timber structure supplied by KLH UK will be built on the pier to house a multi-function visitor centre in a contract thought to be worth £500,000-1m.

Benchmark status for Hastings Pier (the peerless one!)
“Mr. Reis said tens of thousands of people had seen that communities can save piers through the excellent BBC 2 documentary last week, The End of the Pier Show, which featured the rescue of Hastings Pier by its local communiy with a trust upon which South Parade Trust is modelled. “It took the Hastings Pier Trust about six years to acquire and start repairing their pier. With their help, we hope we will do the same in less than three years,” he said. The programme also featured Jess Steele, who was the Treasurer of the successful Hastings Trust when it won an £11.4m lottery grant. Jess is an integral adviser to South Parade Trust”

Any one remember this?
1950’s picture of the Lifeboat extracting a sailing boat and crew. Looks like the boat capsized and drifted into the Pier.

The Two Piers and some history
Hastings Pier Head and Palace Pier (St Leonards) Head 1933
St Leonards Pier was damaged by enemy action, Hastings Pier survived, although they attempted to bomb it on several occasions.
Both St Leonards Pier and Hastings Pier had the Access Section removed during the threat of German invasion. Canadians booby trapped the Piers along the Coast.
St Leonards Pier was further damaged by storms and was finally demolished in 1953 by the RE and local TA.
On Hastings Pier the 1946 replacement section is temporarily braced until the new Visitor Centre for the Pier is built on 6 new Piles which will be driven through mudstone of the Ashdown Beds under the Pier.
